SUMMARY:Children\, Youth and Performance Conference 2023: "Disability and music: music education with adaptive instruments"
DESCRIPTION:This conference is an exchange of knowledge between researchers\, performers\, educators\, practitioners\, and community organizers. Through a range of informative and interactive sessions\, participants will discuss the present and future applications and implications of performance work with\, by\, for\, and about children and youth. There will be a range of in-person events\, panels\, performances\, and workshops spread out during the conference days. All presentations and workshop sessions take place on June 17th and 18th. This year’s conference is entirely in-person. Registrants will receive a full schedule of events closer to the conference dates. My presentation will take place on June 17th at 2:30 pm. \n——— \nAdaptive instruments are generally used to teach music to children with disabilities. This project has for objective to demonstrate that children with all abilities are receptive to alternative ways of learning. I believe that the discovery of adaptive instruments can open the mind of a student\, whether it is a young child\, a teenager\, or a young adult. It can also propose other teaching methods to instructors. \nThe project consists of a series of workshops held between February and June 2023\, allowing groups of music students of various ages to discover instruments and musical material made for musicians and singers with disabilities. The workshops are held in classrooms of the Community Music Schools of Toronto at Jane and Finch. Each participant takes part in one of the workshops. Participants of the choir workshop sing with adaptive content such as brail scores and learn lyrics in American Sign Language (ASL). Participants of the jam session workshop imagine instruments that can be played with a missing part of the body or use conventional instruments in a non-conventional way. Participants of the new technology workshop use devices such as an iPad with digital instruments or digital gloves connected to a computer system. During each workshop\, students work together on a piece that will be performed in a recital at the Jane and Finch music school in June 2023\, to show what they have learned during the workshops to an audience. \nThis research has received the support of York University’s Helen Carswell Chair in Community Engaged Research in the Arts\, in partnership with Community Music Schools of Toronto at Jane and Finch. \nMore details and tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/children-youth-and-performance-conference-2023-tickets-546265634217

SUMMARY:3rd Biennial Disability Studies & Music Education Symposium (DSandME '23)
DESCRIPTION:The theme of the conference is: Disrupting Music Education: Disability as “an ingenious way to live.” DSandME23 will take place from April 27\, 2023\, through April 29\, 2023. \nThe 3rd Biennial International Disability Studies and Music Education Symposium (DSandME23) explores how disability and lived experiences of disabled persons/persons with disabilities provide opportunities to productively disrupt music pedagogy (e.g.\, Shakespeare\, 2014). Disruption functions as a way to become conscious of ableism within structures and practices in music education (Rathgeber & bell\, forthcoming). As Neil Marcus reminds us\, disability both necessitates creativity\, and is itself a site of creativity (Marcus\, 1993; Keifer-Boyd\, 2017). Disruption\, then\, can be an invitation to reconsider\, dream\, and transform practices\, environments\, and relationships through disability-centered frameworks (Piepzna-Samarasinha\, 2018; Sandahl\, 2018). \nI will present the adaptive instruments workshops on Friday\, April 28\, 2023\, from 7 to 7:30 PM EST. Note that my presentation will be followed by a performance by composer Molly Joyce from 7:30 to 8 PM EST. \nMore info and location to come.

SUMMARY:Good Friday 2023 Festival Choir: G.F. Handel’s "Brockes Passion"
DESCRIPTION:Available online on-demand until June 7\, 2023. Including a pre-concert talk with Jonathan Oldengarm\, and organ prelude (Bach’s Sei gegrüßet\, BWV 768). \nThe Metropolitan Festival Choir and Baroque Orchestra (Jonathan Oldengarm\, direction and continuo) present Handel’s rarely-heard Brockes Passion on Good Friday\, April 7\, 2023. Soloists include Michael Colvin\, Evangelist; Geoffrey Sirett\, Jesus; Jacqueline Woodley\, Tochter Zion; Robert Kinar\, Petrus; and soliloquents Jane Fingler\, Gisele Kulak\, Veronika Anissimova\, Michelle Simmons (Judas)\, Charles Davidson\, Nicholas Higgs\, and John Pepper. The Met Festival Choir will be joined this year by a period instrument ensemble (Cristina Zacharias\, Concertmaster\, and members of Tafelmusik). In good historical-performance style\, Wayne C. Vance Organ Scholar Joshua Duncan Lee will play continuo on the church organ; Jonathan Oldengarm conducts and plays recit and aria continuo. \nComposed sometime between 1715 and 1719 while Handel was living in London\, this work is a setting of vivid Passion libretto penned by Handel’s law school classmate Barthold Heinrich Brockes. It is distinct from e.g. the Bach Passions in that it is a purely poetic telling of the story\, rather than a faithful recitation of the scriptural text. As such\, it was banned from liturgical use at the time\, and could only be presented in concert. Georg Philipp Telemann (who\, along with Reinhold Keiser and Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel\, also set the text)\, performed all four settings in four-night marathons for several years\, beginning in 1719 in Hamburg. \nA vivid\, passionate account of the most dramatic week in the Christian liturgical year that is often cited\, yet rarely sung. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience another Handel masterwork\, written in a style that forms a marked contrast with Messiah. \nWebsite \n  \nA few pictures:

SUMMARY:Oral comprehensive examination - Public lecture: "Accessibility in music education: tools and techniques for music educators"
DESCRIPTION:“Education follows society\,” as Michael L. Mark states in his chapter entitled “Music Education History and the Future” in the anthology “Music Education\, Navigating the Future” (2015). In music education\, the methodologies employed by the teachers are in constant evolution with our society to improve accessibility\, diversity and inclusion in class. However\, students with disabilities frequently face ableism and lack of support because of the absence of options available to them to include students with special needs in traditional classrooms. Working with professional musicians with disabilities\, I have often discussed with them the challenges they faced to continue their musical studies. It is usually thanks to one individual (a teacher\, a parent\, a friend) who was thinking out of the box that it was possible for them to find the proper adaptations and teaching/learning methods. This implies that teachers keep an open mind and take into account the abilities of their students. As part of a project in partnership between York University and CMST (Community Music Schools of Toronto)\, I have proposed a series of adaptive instruments and voice workshops to introduce young music students (4 to 13 years old) to different learning experiences in the classroom. These workshops allow teachers to learn new tools and techniques which might be applied in the future\, and students to discover other ways of performing and learning music\, with ASL and Braille music\, new technologies\, and traditional instruments used in a non-traditional way. In my presentation\, I will give an overview of these workshops and demonstrate how these new tools and techniques can help improve music education for students with all abilities. \nOral defence. Questions will be asked by supervisory committee. No questions from the public. \nOnline and in-person lecture open to public. \n
